Former CJI Gogoi took oath as Rajya Sabha Member today amid jeers and chants of "shame" from the Congress and other opposition parties that believe the appointment severely compromises the independence of the judiciary. Gogoi's nomination was announced by the Ministry of Home Affairs in a notification issued on Monday night.
Ranjan Gogoi, aged 65, retired as the chief justice of India in November of last year after a tenure of 13 months. During his time in the Supreme Court, the court delivered landmark judgements on the decriminalisation of homosexuality, the entry of women in Kerala's Sabarimala temple, Ayodhya and the Rafale jet deal along with Assam's National Register of Citizens (NRC).
A writ petition challenging the nomination of former Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi to the Rajya Sabha has been filed by academician Madhu Purnima Kishwar in the Supreme court today.
